In the year 1947 after partition, lakhs of people crossed the border of East Bengal (Now Bangladesh) leaving their belongings.Among those evacuees many were craftsmen,weaver.They all became distressed and displaced and for their rehabilitation under the stewardship of Late Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy former Chief Minister of West Bengal. Refugee Handicrafts was formed as a Govt Sales Emporium in the year of 1953 located at 9B Esplaned East Calcutta - 1 (Now Kolkata) after 1966 Refugee Handicrafts moved from 9B Esplaned East to 3A & 2A Gariahat Road (Kolkata-700019,West Bengal),further its moved on February 1997 from 3A & 2A Gariahat Road to 54/1/1 Hazra road,(Kolkata-700019,West Bengal) . On 27th March 1961 Refugee Handicrafts separated from Govt Of West Bengal and formed a Society under Society Act XXI 1960 where society members are selected by Govt. Of West Bengal .Presently society committee members are selected by Micro Small Medium Enterprises & Textile Department Under Govt Of West Bengal. Now Refugee Handicrafts Administrative Controlled By Micro Small Medium Enterprises & Textile Department Under Govt Of West Bengal.
The motto of Refugee Handicrafts is to market the products of those displaced and distressed people & objective of alleviating the condition of the poor Handloom Weavers. Handicrafts Artisans and sick SSI units under the Administrative Controlled by Govt Of West Bengal and Managing Committee. Now many weavers Co-operative Societies also attach to the Refugee Handicrafts for marketing their products through this organization.Over 3000 craftsmen/Artisans/Weavers/SSI units/Sel help Groups of different districts of West Bengal are financially benefited by selling their products through Refugee Handicrafts Showroom and Govt Supply business. It has a production center of ready made garments & sports items manufacturing unit which is registered as an SSI unit.
